Gareth Thomas and his partner Robin Johnstone were the ninth skating couple to leave Dancing On Ice in semi-final week after Gareth was taken ill and unable to skate. He was one of the two celebrities who were in the bottom two after the phone vote (the other skater was not identified) so there was no skate-off. Instead we were treated to the unused save-me skate’s of the three finalists.
As a result the phone vote was cancelled and those viewers who had voted should get their money refunded.
It was a sad way for Gareth to go out of the competition but it did give Luke Campbell and Jenna Smith an unexpected place in the final. Gareth had had severe motion sickness whilst rehearsing his flying routine and after his first performance of the evening it was clear he was not able to continue. Medical advice was that Gareth should not be allowed to skate for the remainder of the evening as he was weak and suffering from severe dehydration.
Earlier in the evening we had seen the four semi-finalists perform. Matt Lapinskas kept up his favourite tag as he topped the leaderboard for the third week in a row. The full judges leaderboard was:
- 78 (39 + 39) Matt Lapinskas
- 71.5 (33.5 +38) Beth Tweddle
- 62 (30.5 + 31.5) Luke Campbell
- 33.5 (33.5 + 0) Gareth Thomas
So the final will be between Matt Lapinskas, Luke Campbell and Beth Tweddle. A shame for Gareth to miss out but he really was not well enough to skate at all. I am already looking forward to next week’s final. It should be Matt’s trophy unless Beth can raise her game to another level.
