Shayne Ward and his partner Maria Filippov were the fifth skating couple to leave Dancing On Ice in week 5 after a skate-off with Matt Lapinskas and his partner Brianne Delcourt. It was a bit of a surprise that Shayne and Matt were in the bottom two after some poor routines this week from Joe Pasquale and Samia Ghadie but the early stages of this show are always more of a popularity contest than a skating contest.
In the “Save Me” skate Shayne skated first and produced a capable performance. Matt danced to Talking To The Moon and delivered a controlled performance until a slight slip in the middle of the routine put him into danger in the skate-off.
Karen Barber, Ashley Roberts and Robin Cousins all voted to save Matt whilst Jason Gardiner voted for Shayne so it was farewell to Shayne. The key was Matt’s better technical and artistic performance, despite the slip. Jason felt the “save-me” skate should be perfect whereas Robin felt that Matt’s routine was much more challenging despite the slip. It was a shame for Shayne but I agreed with the majority decision.
Earlier in the evening we had seen the remaining eight celebrities skate with the judges leaderboard looking like this:
- 30.5 Beth Tweddle
- 28 Matt Lapinskas
- 27.5 Gareth Thomas
- 23.5 Luke Campbell
- 23.5 Shayne Ward
- 21 Keith Chegwin
- 18 Samia Ghadie
- 18 Joe Pasquale
