Dave Myers And Karen Hauer became the sixth couple to leave Strictly Come Dancing as they lost the dance-off with Mark Benton and Iveta Lukosiute in week 7.
It was the right result as Dave had been welded to the bottom of the leaderboard for some weeks with no sign of any real improvement in his dancing.
With the visit to the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool scheduled for next week it would have been a shame if one of the better dancers had missed out. We have loved Dave’s contribution to Strictly but with the competition hotting up he was being left behind.
The viewers agreed with the judges assessment this week with the bottom two on the judges leaderboard also being the bottom two overall.
Craig Revel Horwood, Darcey Bussell and Bruno Tonioli all chose to save Mark Benton and Iveta Lukosiute so it was time for Dave Myers and Karen Hauer to get on their bikes and leave the show. Len Goodman said that he did not agree with his colleagues and he would have voted to keep Dave as Mark made a number of mistakes in the dance-off. So it was a very close run thing that Mark gets to celebrate his birthday next week at the Tower Ballroom. He will have to raise his game to survive next week.
In the dance-off Dave Myers And Karen Hauer reprised their Tango to The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be.” Dave performed the routine slightly better than in the live show.
Mark Benton and Iveta Lukosiute repeated their James Bond themed Rumba to Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger.” It was especially good to see Iveta dancing in her gold catsuit again which was one of the most memorable parts of their dance.
In the results show Celine Dion also performed.
There was a performance from The Tenors.
Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman presented both the results show and the Saturday live show, as Sir Bruce Forsyth was resting ahead of the visit to Blackpool next week. They performed very well together and I am hesitant to admit it but I didn’t really miss Sir Bruce. Claudia in particular brings a freshness to interactions with the couples as she interviews them on the balcony.
Also missing from this week’s show was Natalie Gumede who had fainted in rehearsals. Will she recover in time to make the trip to Blackpool? We will find out next week.
In Natalie’s absence we had a new star of the dancefloor with Patrick Robinson scoring a 37 for his American Smooth. This included a (maybe rather generous) ten from Darcey.
Some of the bookies previously had Patrick at 100-1 to win the series. Whilst it is an uphill challenge for someone in their 50’s it just shows how wrong the bookies can be as Patrick certainly has a fair chance of making the final and if he gets that far who knows what will happen.
Also impressing this week were Abbey Clancy and Susanna Reid who each got scores of 36 and Ashley Taylor Dawson with an encouraging 35. These four plus Natalie could well take the five places available for the semi-finals in a few week’s time.
