Tony Jacklin and Aliona Vilani became the first couple to leave Strictly Come Dancing as they lost the dance-off with Julian Macdonald and Janette Manrara in week 2.
Tony’s Charleston had only scored 13 from the judges for his Saturday night routine so it was no surprise when Craig Revel Horwood, Darcey Bussell, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli all chose to save Julian Macdonald and his less than stunning Tango.
Julian and Janette danced first and probably made a slight improvement on their main Saturday night routine. However Julian is probably not long for the show as he is not so far getting the audience vote and is likely to be in the bottom two of the judges leaderboard unless there is a dramatic improvement in his dancing in the next week. Also the BBC may soon run out of their costume budget for the show as Julian always seems to want lots of sparkly bits on his outfits!
Tony and Aliona put a brave face on as they tackled the dance-off but I suspect they both knew that the game was up. Tony, great golfer though he is, was never likely to compete with the mobility of other contestants who are a third of his age. He did seem to enjoy the experience though so well done to him for trying.
We are down to fourteen celebrities for next week’s show and we are just starting to see who is likely to feature in the later stages of the competition. For me there are four women and two men who have a chance of getting to the final.
We will see, in coming week’s whether anyone else can improve enough to get to the final.
